Our dear friend, role model and camp leader Lonzell “Stacker” Johnson passed away on December 6, 2020. Over the past 20 years, Stacker has been an integral part of our Camp Leo for Children with Diabetes community, first as a camper and later serving as a key volunteer and staff member. Camp Leo was a huge part of his life, and in turn he made a profound impact on the lives of many in our camp family. He brought a seemingly unlimited amount of enthusiasm to everything that he did and made all of us feel welcome.

Lonzell’s positive impact was immense and far-reaching. His infectious energy, deep thoughtfulness, quirky humor, and spirit of service changed thousands of people’s lives for the better in ways large and small. The outpouring of grief at his passing from people of all walks of life—those who knew him well or only a little, young and old, of all personalities, from across Washington State and beyond—is a testament to his ability to connect with others, and bring joy and wonder to their lives.

He will continue to stay with us all through the many amazing memories and traditions he helped create, especially at camp. We will see his presence everywhere -- in frozen gummy bears and Pop Rocks Rice Krispies treats, in the movies he loved, on any familiar hiking trail. His spirit will live on in campfire skits and songs, in gatherings at the Naches, the laughter during “quick and silly” games, and in anyone who dons an outlandish costume or receives a pie in the face for the sole purpose of bringing joy to others.

You can contribute thoughts and memories of Stacker on his KudoBoard and learn more about continuing his legacy at camp below.

We will always love you and are committed to continuing your legacy, bringing the magic of camp to as many as we are able.

Grief Resources

We want to let you know that you're not alone in dealing with loss. It can be scary and uncomfortable to talk about grief, but most of us are feeling it--kids, teens, and adults, and while we can't fix it or make it go away, we can recognize it and give each other the space and support that our community needs. For those wanting more assistance processing their grief, we have compiled a list of local and national resources which may be helpful to you and/or those you are supporting.

While COVID related restrictions are keeping us safe, they can also complicate our ability to access support and connection. For those wanting more assistance processing their grief, we have compiled a list of resources which may be helpful to you and/or those you are supporting.
